About SKK
SKK, unique and London-based company that combines art architecture and product design.
Its shop was a famous fixture for over 30 years in Lexington Street in the heart of London’s Soho before moving in 2016 to Kentish Town in North London.
It takes its name from its endlessly-innovative founder Shiu-Kay Kan, whose track record for lighting invention, consultancy, product development and manufacture, and retail stretches back over 45 years.
During his long career, mainly in the heart of the West End, Shiu-Kay has built up an astonishing “contacts book” and clients of his lighting design service have included celebrities such as Alexander McQueen, Tim Burton, and Annie Lennox.
Corporate clients include Vivienne Westwood, Next and the Land Securities Group.
SKK sells mostly Shiu-Kay’s own designs, many perfected over a lengthy period of time, which are now icons of the industry.
These have deservedly won awards and found their way into many design books and magazines.
Clients have been as diverse as they have been famous. They have included the former British Prime Minister Margaret
Thatcher, the Count and Countess Von Bismark, and musicians from bands such as U2 and Coldplay.
Amongst many public commissions, Shiu-Kay designed the special lighting scheme at the Memorial Gate on London’s
Constitutional Hill which was erected in 2002 to honour the Commonwealth soldiers who lost their lives in World War II.
Here special fittings with flickering flames were cast in bronze to illuminate the stone pillars and pavilions. More recently,
Shiu-Kay collaborated with JMP Architects on their proposal to turn London’s luxury Sloane Street into a “green boulevard.”
On the domestic front, Shiu-Kay gave us a new generation of paper lanterns, the dinosaur light, the kite light, the dog light, daring new forms of neon, and much more.
